That really depends on who you ask - some folks seem to be moderately happy with this latest offering by Microsoft, while others are staying as far away from it as possible. I haven’t spent enough time working with Vista to have much of an opinion one way or the other yet, though I can say that I already dislike the way it seems to need permission to do the most routine of tasks. It seems to run fast enough to tolerate on my machine, but this machine is a fast, modern PC with 2 gb of RAM, so it should perform fine. No real surprises there.

What I’m hearing from my clients is truly a mixed bag of responses to Vista, with the over-riding impression being fairly negative. Perhaps most telling, one of my clients who provides technical support and managed services to his clients is advising them to not install Vista at all at this point, or at the very least, wait to do so until the first Service Pack is released - that could be a bit of a wait as word on the street says the general delivery for SP1 probably won’t occur until sometime next year.

On the other side, my Linux installation continues to do very well and I have been able to accomplish tasks easily. My most recent task involved creating tickets for a local event to be printed on card stock. Last year, I did these in MS Publisher, but this time around I fired up OpenOffice Writer and created them easily, using a simple table structure within a document to place the ticket elements properly. It was very easy to do and the tickets look great. Bye, Publisher…

“Quote from the ZDNet article: “The overall impression that I get as someone who deals directly with the company is that Microsoft believes that it is right and anyone making a fuss is ultimately wrong”. It’s not surprising to me that billionaire virtual monopolists would have developed arrogance.

However, that’s not the REAL problem, in my opinion. The real problem is that people think that Microsoft is a software company that is routinely abusive. But it isn’t. Actually, Microsoft is an abuse company that uses software as a means of delivering abuse. I think a lot of people agree that, if you look at it that way, Microsoft is excellent at what it does.”
