A recent development in my husband’s business has necessitated our investing in another new computer to handle his company’s files, and, of course, that meant the new box came pre-loaded with Vista Home premium SP1. Largely because of the way his company operates, a relatively robust accounting package was needed, and so, this will be one case where Vista will get to stay on the machine. though, I’d like to say that there is a really good alternative to programs like QuickBook spRo on the Linux side, there’s really isn’t anything yet that I’ve found that can handle what is needed yet.

The good news is that we can still avoid paying for some of the other high-dollar software that most folks load on to their Windows machines by using open source progams where possible. Filezilla for FTP, OpenOffice for an office suite, and Gimp for graphics works are all running nicely on the new Vista box. So far, the machine has performed well and doesn’t seem to have speed issues, even with several programs running at once, so it looks like SP1 has helped a bit in that regard..
