Since my plan was to install Sabayon on my desktop from the DVD live version, the first step was to get a copy of the DVD. These distributions are readily available online but they are quite large and will take awhile to download. The Linksys wireless router at home has a tendency to lock up every now and then, so I found the safest way to download large files was to use a torrent as that allows the file download to be restarted easily if it gets stopped in the middle. A quick tip to increase the download rate on a torrent - set your upload number very low - such as 2 - to allow others to still upload but keeping the ratio much more in your favor. Doing so last night allowed me to pull the 4.45 gb Sabayon DVD version down cleanly over night.

This morning, I burned the DVD and decided to take it for a test drive. Having already installed the mini version, I thought I knew what to expect but the system hung part way through the install. As it turns out, once I restarted it in verbose mode, it was hanging during the KVM portion of the install. Luckily this is a simple fix on my machine - the virtual machine support was disabled in the Bios. Once t was enabled the boot process ran fine and I was able to bring the system up. Looks like we have a winner!

Now for the fun part - deciding how I want to break out the partitions on the machine to make room for the new install. The hard drive is 320 GB, with about 40 currently occupied by Windows Vista on partitions 1 and 4. On partition 2 currently are two different Linux distros - Ubuntu (Fiesty Fawn) and PC Linux OS. Partition 3 is the current install of Sabayon 3.4f from the mini and contains my current email files, which I need to retain. Since I have no real need to retain the Linux distros in Partition 2, I’ll probably delete both of them and use that free space for the new Sabayon install, while still retaining the current one. Once the new system is up and running, I’ll migrate my email over and dump the current Sabayon install, reserving the space for testing purposes.
